NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday said that it was unable to participate in the proposed South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit in Islamabad in the prevailing circumstances.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs conveyed to current SAARC chair Nepal that increasing cross-border attacks in the region and growing interference in the internal affairs of member states by “one country” had created an environment that was “not conducive to the successful holding of the 19th SAARC Summit in Islamabad in November 2016”.
An Indian news channel quoted government sources as saying that three other countries – Afghanistan, Bhutan and Bangladesh – had also pulled out.
